Preview: Will Speak Now outsell than Recovery?

January 3, 2011

Taylor Swift’s third album “Speak Now” recently blasted atop Billboard 200, selling over a million units in its first week, easily becoming the fastest-selling album of 2010. It is no doubt one of the most anticipated album of the year. Prior to the album’s release, Swift sent 3 songs from Speak Now to the Top of the Hot Digital Songs Chart. Upon the album’s release, Swift made history as she placed every single track on the album onto Hot 100. 2010 has indeed been a great year for the country star. But is the success of the album short-lived, like a meteor that burns brightly but fades away? Or will it be able to carry on its success with the consistency like that of Eminem’s “Recovery” another of 2010′s fastest-selling releases?

Eminem’s “Recovery” opened atop Billboard 200 with a whooping 741,000 copies sold in its first week. The album managed to sell over a 100,000 units in its first 9 weeks, staying up in the penthouse of Billboard 200 for 7 weeks. The singles released were very well-received, 2 of which peaked at No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100.

Breaking News!

November 21, 2010

King Of Pop, Michael Jackson

It has been 1 year since the passing of the legendary King-of-Pop, Michael Jackson.

His untimely death shook the world, shocking millions. Many were deeply saddened by the loss of Michael Jackson. Today, Michael Jackson returns to the spotlight with the announcement of his upcoming release, Michael.

Michael, his posthumous album, contains previously unreleased material and has been slated for its US release on 14 December 2010. It features appearances by Akon, 50 Cent and Lenny Kravitz.

The 1st track to be unveiled, “Breaking News”. It was released on 15 November 2010 and has since garnered considerable airplay and a fair bit of controversy.

The authenticity of the song was questioned. Many doubted the vocals on the track were really Michael’s, among these people are Jackson’s mother, Katherine, his sister La Toya Jackson, his two eldest children and his nephews, T.J., Taj and Taryll. Michael’s father, Joe even commented that his son would not want his uncompleted work to be released. The news has also upset many of Michael Jackson’s fans. In spite of this, Sony Music Group still stands firm on their claim that the vocals belonged to the late Michael Jackson. Upon the single’s release, it received poor reviews from critics.

“Breaking News” sounded kind of incomplete. It didn’t really feel like his previous songs. However it did generated curiosity in me to want to know what the other new tracks are like.

The new album is surrounded by skepticism and curiosity. I believe the album will debut with high sales despite all the controversy. The sales are likely to by driven by the huge amount of  buzz. Being released during the holiday season when people are buying more, the album is likely to experience an additional boost in sales.

What do you think about his upcoming album?

Aaliyah Top 10

August 7, 2010

25 August 2010 would mark the ninth year since the passing of Aaliyah, one of the most influential R&B artistes of the 1990s. Aaliyah has been credited for bridging hip-hop and electronica, combining the two genres, changing the face of R&B and hip-hop and pushing the music industry towards a new, futuristic and urban sound. She also popularized stuttering, a technique now commonly heard in numerous pop songs. Aaliyah has sold 32 million albums worldwide. Her great contributions to the music industry earned her the title of Princess Of R&B.

Even though she has been absent from the music scene for the past few years, Aaliyah’s music still retains its contemporary appeal. Her posthumous releases have also met commercial and critical success. Aaliyah had given us so much - she took part in charity concerts and has inspired many through her music. It has been nine years since Aaliyah left us, she still lives on in our hears through her undying music and her legacy.

In memory of Aaliyah, we have compiled a list of ten of our favourite Aaliyah songs.

#10 Journey To The Past

Journey To The Past was released as the second single off the Anastasia Original Soundtrack. It enjoyed moderate success in the US and UK.

“Unforgettable” from Drake’s debut album, Thank Me Later, samples this song.

Rock The Boat was the last single Aaliyah while she was alive. It is known for its racy, sexually suggestive lyrics. The song earned her a nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance at the 44th Grammy Awards.
